Which continent has the largest population?
Answer
Asia
Answer
Asia
Asia has the largest population of any continent. It is home to roughly 4.7–4.8 billion people, representing about 60% of the world’s population under recent estimates.
Asia’s population is concentrated unevenly. East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia contain enormous urban and agricultural regions, while Siberia, the Arabian Peninsula, the Tibetan Plateau, and parts of Central Asia are much more sparsely populated. India and China alone account for more than 2.8 billion people in recent estimates, making them the two most important contributors to Asia’s demographic weight.
The answer is not simply a result of modern growth. Asia has supported large populations for thousands of years because of fertile river valleys, monsoon climates, intensive rice cultivation, and early urban civilizations in places such as Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and China. Population rankings can change over time for individual countries, but Asia’s lead among continents is not close. Africa has the fastest growth rate, yet remains second in total population.
