Which console was the platform for Pokémon Sword and Shield?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Sword and Shield were released for the Nintendo Switch.

The games are eighth-generation Pokémon role-playing games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. They launched worldwide on November 15, 2019, making them the first new core Pokémon games designed specifically for Nintendo’s hybrid home-and-portable console.

Sword and Shield take place in the Galar region, which is inspired by the United Kingdom. Their major new mechanics include Dynamax and Gigantamax, which temporarily enlarge Pokémon during selected battles. The games also introduced the Wild Area, a large explorable space with changing weather and visible Pokémon.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! had already appeared on Nintendo Switch in 2018, but they are remakes derived from Pokémon Yellow. Sword and Shield are therefore commonly identified as the first original-generation core series pair released for the platform.
