The original Pokémon Snap was released for the Nintendo 64. It debuted in Japan on March 21, 1999, and used the console’s 3D capabilities to present Pokémon photography as a dedicated spin-off adventure.

Players control Todd Snap, a photographer sent by Professor Oak to Pokémon Island. Instead of capturing Pokémon for battles, the player rides through automatically moving courses and photographs Pokémon in different environments. Professor Oak evaluates the pictures, making composition and timing central to the game.

Pokémon Snap was initially planned for Nintendo’s 64DD peripheral, but development moved to a standard Nintendo 64 cartridge after delays affecting the add-on. The game included 63 Pokémon from the original generation. Its later releases included Virtual Console versions for Wii and Wii U, but those re-releases do not change the original console answer.
