Which console originally received Pokémon Snap?

The story behind the answer

The Nintendo 64 originally received Pokémon Snap.

Pokémon Snap launched in Japan on March 21, 1999, as a Nintendo 64 game. It used the console’s 3D capabilities to place Pokémon in environments that players could explore from a first-person viewpoint while riding the Zero-One vehicle.

The game was unusual for the franchise because its main activity was photography rather than battling, collecting, or trading. Players photographed Pokémon, then submitted their images to Professor Oak for scoring based on factors such as size, pose, and position in the frame.

The project had initially been planned for the Nintendo 64DD, a disk-based peripheral with extra storage. Delays affecting that peripheral led to a cartridge release on the standard Nintendo 64. This explains why some development histories mention the 64DD even though the finished game was not released for it.

Pokémon Snap later appeared through Nintendo’s Virtual Console services and Nintendo Classics. Its direct sequel, New Pokémon Snap, arrived on Nintendo Switch in 2021. The original remains an important example of how Pokémon expanded into experimental console genres during its first decade.
