Which Confederate general died at the Battle of Shiloh?

Albert Sidney Johnston was the Confederate general who died at the Battle of Shiloh. He was shot in the right leg on April 6, 1862, while personally directing Confederate attacks near the Peach Orchard in Tennessee.

Johnston was the senior Confederate commander at Shiloh and had launched a major surprise assault against Ulysses S. Grant’s Union army. He frequently rode close to the front to rally troops and coordinate attacks. The bullet severed the popliteal artery behind his knee, and he bled to death before medical assistance could reach him. He was 59 years old.

Johnston’s death was a severe blow to Confederate morale. He was the highest-ranking officer killed in combat during the Civil War, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis had considered him one of the Confederacy’s finest generals. P. G. T. Beauregard assumed command after Johnston fell and continued the attack, but the exhausted Confederate army failed to destroy Grant’s forces. The other choices survived Shiloh and died elsewhere or after the war.
