Which composer wrote the six Brandenburg Concertos, presented to Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg?

The story behind the answer

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the six Brandenburg Concertos, presented to Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg.

Bach completed the collection around 1721 and sent a fair-copy manuscript to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt. The dedication asked the margrave to accept the concertos, although there is no evidence that the works were actually performed at his court. Their title became standard later rather than originating with Bach.

The six pieces demonstrate contrasting combinations of instruments and styles. The collection includes concertos featuring horns, trumpets, recorders, oboes, bassoon, harpsichord, violin and other strings. The Fifth Brandenburg Concerto is particularly notable for giving the harpsichord a prominent solo role.

These works are central examples of the Baroque concerto grosso tradition, but the set is not uniform in form. Bach varies the scoring and structure from one concerto to the next, making the collection a showcase of his instrumental imagination.
