Which composer wrote the opera Wozzeck, premiered in Berlin in 1925?
Answer
Alban Berg
Answer
Alban Berg
Alban Berg wrote the opera Wozzeck, which premiered in Berlin in 1925.
Berg based the opera on Georg Büchner’s unfinished drama Woyzeck, using a libretto he assembled from Büchner’s scenes. The story follows a poor soldier subjected to exploitation, medical experimentation, jealousy, and violence. Berg’s score combines intense expressionism with carefully organized musical forms.
Wozzeck received its first performance at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin on 14 December 1925. Erich Kleiber conducted the premiere. The opera quickly became one of the defining stage works of early twentieth-century modernism.
Berg studied with Arnold Schoenberg and is often identified with the Second Viennese School, alongside Schoenberg and Anton Webern. Wozzeck is sometimes confused with Berg’s later opera Lulu, but Lulu remained unfinished at his death and was completed posthumously by Friedrich Cerha.
