Which composer wrote the opera Tosca, first performed in Rome in 1900?

The story behind the answer

Giacomo Puccini wrote the opera Tosca, which was first performed in Rome in 1900.

Tosca was commissioned by the Teatro Costanzi and premiered on 14 January 1900. Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa adapted the libretto from Victorien Sardou’s French play La Tosca. The opera is set in Rome during the Napoleonic Wars and follows the singer Floria Tosca, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and the police chief Baron Scarpia.

Puccini’s score is known for its intense drama, recurring musical motifs, and famous arias including “Vissi d’arte” and “E lucevan le stelle.” The opera is sometimes confused with Verdi’s similarly dramatic works, but Tosca is specifically associated with Puccini’s mature operatic style. Puccini also wrote La bohème, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.
