Which composer wrote the opera The Barber of Seville, premiered in Rome in 1816?

The story behind the answer

Gioachino Rossini wrote the opera The Barber of Seville, premiered in Rome in 1816.

The opera’s Italian title is Il barbiere di Siviglia, or Almaviva, and it received its first performance at Rome’s Teatro Argentina on 20 February 1816. Cesare Sterbini wrote the libretto, based on Pierre Beaumarchais’s comedy Le Barbier de Séville. The plot follows Count Almaviva’s attempts to marry Rosina, aided by the clever barber Figaro.

The first performance was famously unsuccessful, partly because of stage mishaps and audience hostility, but later performances established the opera as a comic masterpiece. Rossini’s rapid, repeated musical patterns helped inspire the term “Rossini crescendo.” The work is often confused with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, but Mozart’s opera continues Beaumarchais’s story and was written decades earlier.
