Which composer wrote 'The Magic Flute'?

The story behind the answer

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote The Magic Flute.

Known in German as Die Zauberflöte, the opera was composed in 1791, near the end of Mozart’s life. It was written for a German-language theater company led by Emanuel Schikaneder, who also wrote the libretto and performed the comic role of Papageno. Unlike a fully sung Italian opera, The Magic Flute is a Singspiel, combining musical numbers with spoken dialogue.

The story follows Prince Tamino, who sets out to rescue Pamina and eventually undergoes trials alongside her. Its mixture of fairy-tale adventure, comedy, solemn ritual, and Enlightenment ideals has made it one of the most frequently performed operas in the repertory. The famous Queen of the Night arias are among its most demanding roles for a coloratura soprano.

The opera premiered in Vienna on September 30, 1791, only about two months before Mozart’s death. A common mix-up is confusing Mozart’s role as composer with Schikaneder’s role as librettist and theater impresario. The Magic Flute was Mozart’s final opera.
