Which composer wrote the famous New Year's Eve waltz The Blue Danube?

The story behind the answer

Johann Strauss II wrote the famous New Year's Eve waltz The Blue Danube.

The work's full German title is An der schönen blauen Donau, commonly translated as The Blue Danube. Johann Strauss II composed it in 1866, and it was first performed in Vienna in 1867. The original version included a chorus, but the purely orchestral version became the one most commonly heard.

The waltz is strongly associated with Vienna's New Year celebrations, especially broadcasts of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. It is usually performed after the concert's official program or as part of the surrounding celebration, while Johann Strauss II's Radetzky March traditionally closes the concert.

The composer is often called the “Waltz King.” He should not be confused with his father, Johann Strauss I, who also wrote famous dance music. The Blue Danube is not Austria's national anthem, although its cultural importance makes it one of the country's best-known musical works.
