Which composer wrote the Czech comic opera The Bartered Bride?

The story behind the answer

Bedřich Smetana wrote the Czech comic opera The Bartered Bride.

The opera, titled Prodaná nevěsta in Czech, was first performed at the Provisional Theatre in Prague in 1866. Its libretto was written by Karel Sabina, and the story follows Mařenka and Jeník as they confront family expectations, a proposed marriage arrangement, and a series of comic misunderstandings.

Smetana revised the opera several times after its first production. The work eventually became one of the most important operas in the Czech repertory and helped establish a distinct Czech national style in 19th-century opera.

The lively dances, especially the polka and furiant, are often highlighted in concert performances. The opera is sometimes confused with works by Antonín Dvořák or Leoš Janáček, later Czech composers, but The Bartered Bride belongs specifically to Smetana’s stage output.
