Which composer wrote the ballet Petrushka, first performed in Paris in 1911?

The story behind the answer

Igor Stravinsky wrote the ballet Petrushka, first performed in Paris in 1911.

Petrushka was created for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 13 June 1911. The original production featured choreography by Michel Fokine, designs by Alexandre Benois, and Vaslav Nijinsky in the title role.

The story centers on three puppets brought to life during a Shrovetide fair in Saint Petersburg: Petrushka, the Ballerina, and the Moor. The score combines vivid orchestration with folk-like material and sharply contrasting rhythmic ideas.

Stravinsky originally conceived some of the music as a concert piece for piano and orchestra before it became a ballet. Petrushka followed The Firebird and preceded The Rite of Spring in the composer’s early Ballets Russes period, but it is a separate work with its own puppet-theater subject.
