Which composer wrote Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, first performed in Vienna in 1808?

The story behind the answer

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, first performed in Vienna in 1808.

The symphony is among Beethoven’s most famous works and is recognized by its opening four-note motif. Beethoven developed this short rhythmic idea throughout the four-movement composition, creating an unusually unified dramatic structure.

Beethoven worked on the symphony for several years before completing it. The first performance took place on 22 December 1808 at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, in a long concert that also included the premieres of several other major works by Beethoven.

The piece is sometimes called the “Fate” Symphony, but that nickname was not supplied by Beethoven and is not an official title. Its finale is notable for the addition of piccolo, contrabassoon, and three trombones to the orchestra.
