Georg Solti holds the record for the most Grammy wins by a classical conductor, with 31 competitive Grammy Awards.
The Hungarian-British conductor collected the awards primarily for recordings made with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles. His most celebrated recording project was a complete studio recording of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, produced with Decca between 1958 and 1965.
Solti’s Grammy total made him the most awarded individual in Grammy history for many years. Beyoncé later surpassed his overall record in 2023, but Solti remains the leading classical conductor by Grammy victories. His achievements also included a Trustees Award connected with the Ring recording and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.
Solti was born in Budapest in 1912 and became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969. He held that post until 1991, helping establish the orchestra as one of the world’s leading recording ensembles. His Grammy record reflects both conducting excellence and the influence of long-term classical recording collaborations.
