Which company's cloud service is called Azure?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft’s cloud service is called Azure.

Microsoft Azure is a cloud-computing platform that provides computing power, storage, databases, networking, analytics, artificial intelligence, and other online services. Organizations can use Azure to run applications and manage data in Microsoft’s global infrastructure instead of maintaining all the necessary physical servers themselves.

Azure began as “Project Red Dog” and was introduced at Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference in October 2008. It launched commercially as Windows Azure in February 2010, then adopted the shorter Microsoft Azure name in March 2014. The rebranding reflected the platform’s expansion beyond Windows and Microsoft-only technologies.

Azure is often confused with Microsoft 365, which is a subscription family of productivity applications and services including Office apps, Teams, and cloud storage. Azure is the underlying cloud platform used by developers, businesses, governments, and many other organizations. Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud are competing cloud platforms, not names for Microsoft’s service.
