Nvidia was the first semiconductor maker valued at $1 trillion.
Nvidia reached the milestone in May 2023 as investors responded to soaring demand for its graphics-processing units and related data-center technology. Its chips became central to the rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence, including the training and operation of large language models.
The company began in 1993 and was initially best known for graphics chips used in personal computers and video games. It later expanded into scientific computing, autonomous-vehicle systems, and data-center accelerators.
Nvidia is sometimes confused with TSMC in market-capitalization questions. TSMC manufactures chips for many designers, including Nvidia, but Nvidia designs the processors and became the first semiconductor company to cross the $1 trillion valuation threshold. Market values can subsequently fall as well as rise.
