The American Research and Development Corporation was the first modern venture capital firm, founded in 1946.

ARD was incorporated in Boston on June 6, 1946, by MIT president Karl Compton, Federal Reserve leader Ralph Flanders, and Harvard Business School professor Georges Doriot. Its mission was to channel outside capital into promising young companies rather than relying solely on wealthy families or established corporations.

The firm helped define modern venture capital by combining institutional funding with professional investment selection and oversight. One of its best-known investments was Digital Equipment Corporation, whose early funding eventually produced an enormous return for ARD investors.

A common mix-up is J.H. Whitney & Company, founded in 1946 as well. Whitney was an important early venture investor, but ARD is more commonly identified as the first modern venture capital firm because it raised capital from institutions and operated through a professional investment model. ARD merged into Textron in 1972 and formally ended as an independent firm in 1976.
