Which company was founded by Thomas Edison in 1892?

The story behind the answer

General Electric was formed in 1892 through a merger involving Thomas Edison’s Edison General Electric Company.

Edison’s electrical businesses had expanded into lamps, dynamos, motors, and lighting equipment during the 1880s. In 1889, several of those interests were consolidated into Edison General Electric Company, backed by financiers including J. P. Morgan. That company later merged with the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, led by Charles A. Coffin, to create General Electric in 1892.

So the stored answer is the canonical one, although the wording simplifies the corporate history. Edison was not GE’s sole founder: the merger also involved Thomson-Houston executives, investors, and directors. Edison’s importance came from the businesses and inventions that formed one half of the new company’s ancestry.

GE became a major producer of electrical equipment and later expanded into appliances, aviation, healthcare, transportation, energy, and finance. A common mix-up is Westinghouse, founded by George Westinghouse, Edison’s famous rival in the “war of the currents.”
