Which company was founded by Soichiro Honda in 1948? The answer is Honda.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was incorporated on September 24, 1948, by engineer and industrialist Soichiro Honda. Its early business focused on affordable motorized bicycles, an especially practical product in postwar Japan, where fuel and transportation were scarce. Honda’s first major product was the 1947 A-Type bicycle with an auxiliary engine, followed by the 1949 Dream D motorcycle.
Honda’s origin is sometimes confused with Soichiro Honda’s earlier company, Tōkai Seiki, which he founded in 1937 to manufacture piston rings. That business supplied parts to Toyota but was damaged during World War II and the 1945 Mikawa earthquake. Honda used the salvage proceeds to establish the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946, the immediate predecessor of Honda Motor.
Takeo Fujisawa joined Honda in 1949 and provided crucial financial and marketing leadership. Together, Honda and Fujisawa expanded the company from motorcycle production into automobiles and eventually a broad range of engines and mobility products.
