Which company was founded by King C. Gillette in 1901?

The story behind the answer

Gillette was founded by King C. Gillette in 1901. The business began as the American Safety Razor Company, created to sell Gillette’s newly developed disposable-blade safety razor.

King Gillette had worked for the Crown Cork and Seal Company, whose disposable bottle caps influenced his thinking about products that customers would repeatedly replace. He pursued a razor with a thin, inexpensive blade that could be discarded when dull instead of sharpened.

The company was founded on 28 September 1901, and its name changed to the Gillette Safety Razor Company in July 1902. Production began in 1903, initially with modest sales, but improved manufacturing and aggressive marketing soon made the razor widely successful.

The answer is often shortened to “Gillette,” although the formal early company names were longer. The brand later became part of The Gillette Company and was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2005. King Gillette also did not invent the basic idea of a safety razor; his breakthrough was the mass-market disposable blade system.
