Dole Food Company traces its pineapple business to the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, founded by James Dole in 1901. Dole established the operation in Wahiawa on Oahu, helping transform Hawaiian pineapple into a major export industry.

Dole arrived in Hawaii in 1899 after studying at Harvard and bought roughly 60 acres for pineapple cultivation. He recognized that canned fruit could travel long distances, then built processing facilities to preserve and ship pineapples to mainland markets.

The company expanded rapidly. In 1907, Dole moved major cannery operations to Honolulu Harbor and promoted Hawaiian pineapple through magazine advertising. In 1911, company engineer Henry Ginaca developed a machine that mechanized peeling and coring, greatly increasing production.
