Which company was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen?

The story behind the answer

The company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen was Microsoft.

Gates and Allen established Microsoft on April 4, 1975, after developing a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800, an early personal computer made by MITS. The pair demonstrated the software to MITS in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and MITS agreed to distribute it as Altair BASIC. Microsoft’s original name was styled “Micro-Soft,” combining “microcomputer” and “software.”

The company initially focused on programming languages rather than operating systems. Its major breakthrough came in 1980, when IBM selected Microsoft to provide an operating system for its personal computers. Microsoft supplied MS-DOS and retained the right to license it to other manufacturers, a decision that helped make the company a dominant force in the PC industry.

Windows followed as Microsoft’s best-known product line, while the company later expanded into Office, Xbox, Azure, Surface and many other businesses. IBM was an important early partner, but it did not found Microsoft; Google and Apple were founded separately and by different groups of people.
