Which company suffered the 2014 cyberattack that disrupted Sony Pictures Entertainment and leaked internal emails?

The story behind the answer

Sony Pictures suffered the 2014 cyberattack that disrupted its systems and leaked internal emails.

In November 2014, attackers calling themselves the Guardians of Peace compromised Sony Pictures Entertainment. The incident disrupted company computers, exposed internal emails and other data, and involved the release of unreleased films and confidential corporate information.

The attack became especially prominent after threats were made concerning the comedy film The Interview, which depicted a fictional plot involving North Korea’s leader. The United States government publicly attributed the attack to North Korea, although attribution in cyberspace can be technically and politically complex.

Sony Pictures is a film and television company within Sony’s entertainment business. It should not be confused with Sony Music, a separate part of the wider Sony group.
