Peloton recalled its Tread+ and Tread treadmills in 2021 after a child died in a treadmill accident.
The U.S. recall followed reports of children being pulled beneath the rear roller of the Tread+ and injuries involving the Tread. The Tread+ was a large, slatted-belt treadmill designed for home use, while the Tread was a separate model with a conventional running belt.
Peloton and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission initially disagreed publicly about the urgency of the issue. They later announced a joint recall covering both models. Peloton offered refunds and stopped sales while working on safety measures.
The recall highlighted the risks of exercise equipment in homes where children or pets can approach moving machinery. It also showed why manufacturer warnings, safety clearances, and physical access controls matter even when a product is intended for adults.
