Which company produced the stainless-steel-bodied DMC-12?
Answer
DeLorean Motor Company
Answer
DeLorean Motor Company
The DeLorean Motor Company produced the stainless-steel-bodied DMC-12. Founded by former General Motors executive John DeLorean, the company built its only production car at a factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland.
The car used brushed, unpainted SAE 304 stainless-steel outer panels attached to a fiberglass underbody and steel backbone chassis. Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign created the distinctive shape, while Lotus helped re-engineer the chassis and engineering package. Its gull-wing doors and stainless finish became its defining visual features.
Production began in late 1980, with customer cars sold mainly for the 1981–1983 model years. The company entered receivership in 1982 and ceased production soon afterward, with roughly 9,000 cars completed. “DMC-12” was an internal development name tied to an intended $12,000 price; the production model was marketed simply as the DeLorean. Its later fame came largely from the Back to the Future films.
