Which company placed the first banner ad on the web?

The story behind the answer

AT&T placed the first widely recognized banner ad on the web.

The ad appeared on HotWired, Wired magazine’s pioneering online publication, on October 27, 1994. It used the famous line “Have you ever clicked your mouse right HERE?” and directed visitors to an online tour of museums. Modem Media created the campaign for AT&T.

The banner was more than a digital billboard: it was clickable, giving advertisers a measurable way to send web visitors to another destination. Reports say roughly 44% of viewers clicked it, an extraordinary response compared with modern online advertising rates.

This milestone is sometimes confused with the first online advertisement of any kind. Earlier text-based ads and commercial promotions existed, and GNN sold an early clickable advertisement to a law firm in 1994. AT&T’s distinction is specifically tied to the first major banner ad, the rectangular graphic format that became central to early web advertising.
