Which company owns the Instagram app?

The story behind the answer

Meta Platforms owns the Instagram app.

Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in October 2010 as a photo-sharing service. Its early appeal came from simple mobile photography, square images, filters, feeds, and social interaction. An Android version followed in 2012, expanding the service beyond Apple’s mobile ecosystem.

Facebook, Inc. acquired Instagram in April 2012 for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. The deal allowed Instagram to keep operating as a distinct product while benefiting from Facebook’s infrastructure, engineering resources, and advertising business. Facebook, Inc. changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in 2021 as the company emphasized a broader family of products and its metaverse ambitions.

A common mix-up is saying Facebook owns Instagram. That was historically accurate before the corporate rebrand, but Meta Platforms is the current parent company. Twitter, Apple, and Google do not own Instagram.
