Alphabet owns the Google search engine and is the parent company ranked on stock markets as Alphabet Inc.
Google reorganized under a new holding company called Alphabet in 2015. Google became Alphabet’s largest subsidiary, while several other businesses and projects were placed under the broader corporate structure.
Alphabet’s publicly traded share classes include Class A shares with voting rights and Class C shares without ordinary voting rights. These share classes contribute to the company’s total equity value and are considered when calculating market capitalization.
A common mix-up is to call the listed company simply Google. Google remains the best-known operating business, but Alphabet is the corporate entity whose market capitalization is compared with companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
