Google operates the Google Public DNS service available at the IPv4 address 8.8.8.8.
A Domain Name System resolver translates human-readable names such as example.com into IP addresses that computers can use. Google Public DNS offers a publicly reachable alternative to a resolver supplied by an internet service provider or local network administrator.
Google Public DNS also uses 8.8.4.4 as another well-known IPv4 address and provides IPv6 addresses for compatible networks. Using a public resolver does not make all internet traffic anonymous or encrypted; it mainly changes which service handles DNS queries.
Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 and other public resolvers are separate services. DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS can encrypt the connection between a device and a resolver, but those technologies do not change the basic purpose of DNS.
