Which company manufactures the three-wheeled Ape light commercial vehicle?

The story behind the answer

Piaggio manufactures the three-wheeled Ape light commercial vehicle.

The Ape began as a Piaggio project in 1948, when the company adapted the mechanical ideas of its Vespa scooter into a compact three-wheeled carrier. Two rear wheels supported a cargo bed or enclosed body, giving small businesses an inexpensive alternative to a conventional truck.

Piaggio’s model line evolved through numerous forms, including pickups, vans, passenger-carrying Calessino versions and autorickshaws. Early vehicles were closely related to the Vespa, but later generations developed more independent structures and larger engines. The company’s commercial-vehicle operation eventually produced most Apes in India, where the design became especially prominent in the three-wheeler market.

The distractors reflect real Italian transport names but not the Ape’s manufacturer. Lambretta is associated with scooters, Innocenti was an Italian industrial and vehicle maker, and Bajaj manufactures competing three-wheelers. Their connection to small vehicles can make them tempting choices, but the Ape is a Piaggio product.
