Mazda manufactured the first-generation MX-5 Miata, launched in 1989.
The first-generation MX-5, known internally as the NA, debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989. Mazda designed it as a lightweight, affordable two-seat roadster with rear-wheel drive and a simple manual soft top. Its engineering followed the “Jinba-ittai” idea, commonly translated as the unity of horse and rider.
The car drew inspiration from classic British roadsters but aimed to improve reliability and everyday usability. In Japan it was sold as the Roadster, in the United States as the MX-5 Miata, and in some other markets simply as the MX-5. The first generation remained in production until 1997, establishing a model line that became one of the best-selling two-seat sports cars.
