Which company manufactured the DMC-12, the car used as the time machine in Back to the Future?

The DeLorean Motor Company manufactured the DMC-12, the stainless-steel sports car used as the time machine in Back to the Future.

Founded by former General Motors executive John DeLorean, the DeLorean Motor Company produced the car for the American market in the early 1980s. Production took place at a factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland, with assembly beginning in 1981 and ending in 1982 after the company entered financial difficulties.

The DMC-12 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign and became recognizable for its brushed stainless-steel body panels and gull-wing doors. It used a rear-mounted 2.85-liter V6 engine developed through a partnership involving Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. Although the car was officially marketed simply as the DeLorean, DMC-12 was its internal pre-production designation.

The film connection made the DeLorean far more famous than its brief production run might otherwise have allowed. In Back to the Future, Doc Brown converts one into a time machine, giving the car an enduring place in popular culture.
