Which company led development of the mobile game Pokémon GO?

The story behind the answer

Niantic led development of the mobile game Pokémon GO.

Pokémon GO is an augmented-reality game that uses GPS and location data to place Pokémon in the real world. Players explore their surroundings, find creatures, collect items, and participate in battles and raids through a mobile device.

Niantic developed the game in collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. It launched in July 2016, first appearing in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States before expanding to other countries. Its use of real-world locations helped it become one of the most visible Pokémon releases of the 2010s.

The game is sometimes attributed entirely to Nintendo because Nintendo was a major corporate partner and shareholder. However, Niantic is credited as the developer. Pokémon GO also grew from Niantic's earlier location-based game Ingress, which supplied experience with map-based exploration and augmented-reality play.
