TSMC is the world’s largest semiconductor foundry by revenue.
A semiconductor foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company pioneered this dedicated foundry model after its founding in 1987 by Morris Chang.
TSMC manufactures products for customers across smartphones, computers, data centers, automobiles, and artificial intelligence. Its customers include major chip designers that outsource production while concentrating on architecture and product development.
TSMC is often confused with fabless chip designers such as Nvidia or with integrated manufacturers such as Intel and Samsung. Its strategic importance comes from advanced process technology and enormous manufacturing capacity. That role has made TSMC one of the most valuable companies in the global semiconductor industry.
