Apple introduced the first iPhone in 2007 under Steve Jobs’s leadership.
Jobs unveiled the device on January 9, 2007, at Macworld in San Francisco. Apple described it as a combination of a widescreen iPod, a mobile phone, and an internet communications device. Its multitouch display and software-focused interface distinguished it from many earlier smartphones.
The first iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007. It initially used a 2G cellular connection and was sold in 4 GB and 8 GB versions. The device helped shift the smartphone market toward large touchscreens and downloadable applications.
The original iPhone is sometimes confused with the first iPhone 3G, released in 2008. The later model added support for faster 3G networks and introduced the App Store alongside its launch-era software ecosystem.
