Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007 and later became one of the world’s largest companies by market value.
Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. Apple combined a mobile telephone, an iPod, and an internet communicator in one touchscreen device, presenting the product as a major change in mobile computing.
The first iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007. It used a multi-touch display rather than the physical keyboards common on many competing smartphones at the time. The App Store followed in 2008, creating a software ecosystem that became central to the iPhone business.
The iPhone is not the same as Apple’s first product or its original route to success: the company began with personal computers, including the Apple II. Its later market-cap growth came from the scale of the iPhone business combined with Macs, services, wearables, and other products.
