Which company, founded in 1993, became a market-cap giant by supplying graphics processors for gaming and artificial intelligence?

The story behind the answer

Nvidia, founded in 1993, became a market-cap giant by supplying graphics processors for gaming and artificial intelligence.

Nvidia was established by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem in 1993. The company initially focused on graphics hardware for personal computers and became especially associated with graphics processing units, or GPUs.

Its CUDA software platform, introduced in 2006, enabled developers to use Nvidia GPUs for general-purpose parallel computing. That capability later became highly important for machine-learning workloads, whose calculations can be accelerated by large numbers of parallel processors.

Nvidia’s rise in market value was therefore tied not only to gaming graphics cards but also to data-center chips, networking products, and AI infrastructure. A ten-for-one stock split took effect in June 2024, changing the per-share price without changing the company’s underlying market capitalization.
