Tesla first surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021, becoming the sixth U.S. company to do so.
Tesla crossed the threshold in October 2021 after its share price rose sharply following a major vehicle-order announcement. The milestone made Tesla the sixth U.S. company to achieve a market value of at least $1 trillion, following Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Facebook, which is now called Meta Platforms.
Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations about electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, software, charging infrastructure, and its potential role in transforming transportation. Its market value was far larger than that of most traditional automakers at the time.
Market capitalization measures investors’ valuation of equity and can differ greatly from current sales or production. Tesla’s later stock split also changed the price per share without changing the underlying value of shareholders’ ownership at the moment of the split.
