Apple first reached a $2 trillion market capitalization during trading in August 2020.
Apple crossed the $2 trillion mark on August 19, 2020, making it the first publicly traded company to reach that valuation. The milestone came just over two years after Apple became the first U.S. company valued at $1 trillion.
Market capitalization is the total value investors assign to a company’s outstanding shares. It can rise rapidly when the share price increases, even if the company has not doubled its factories, employees, or annual sales. Apple’s strong ecosystem of devices and services helped sustain investor demand.
Saudi Aramco had also been valued around $2 trillion after its 2019 stock-market debut, but Apple’s achievement was widely reported as the first time a listed company crossed the threshold in public equity trading. Microsoft later became the second U.S. company to pass $2 trillion.
