Which company did Levi Strauss found? He founded Levi Strauss & Co.
Levi Strauss & Co. began as a dry-goods business, not initially as a dedicated jeans manufacturer. In the early 1850s, Strauss moved from New York to San Francisco to establish a West Coast branch of his brothers’ wholesale operation. The company imported and sold goods including clothing, bedding, combs, purses, and handkerchiefs.
The business later became famous for riveted work pants. Nevada tailor Jacob W. Davis developed a method of strengthening stress points with copper rivets and approached Strauss about financing and commercializing the idea. Their patent was issued in 1873, with half assigned to Levi Strauss & Co.
That partnership helped create the foundation of the modern blue-jeans industry. Gap Inc., Lee Jeans, and Wrangler are separate companies and brands, although Lee and Wrangler also became major names in denim. “Levi’s” is the familiar consumer brand name, while Levi Strauss & Co. is the company’s formal name.
