Which company developed the planned California community of Irvine?
Answer
Irvine Company
Answer
Irvine Company
The Irvine Company developed the planned California community of Irvine.
The company traces its landholding history to the Irvine Ranch, assembled in the nineteenth century by James Irvine and his family. In the twentieth century, the Irvine Company worked with planners and architects to develop a new city in Orange County. Irvine was incorporated as a city in 1971, after years of planning and construction.
The community is known for its village-based plan, extensive parks, separated traffic routes in many areas, schools, employment districts, and a large inventory of housing. The company developed much of the land, but Irvine is a municipality governed by its own city government and is not simply a private company town.
The Irvine Company has also developed commercial, retail, apartment, and office properties. Its history is distinct from Levitt & Sons, whose postwar suburban projects became famous for mass-produced housing in places such as Levittown.
