Which company developed the original Pokémon video games?

Game Freak developed the original Pokémon video games.

Game Freak was founded in Japan by Satoshi Tajiri and began as a video-game magazine before becoming a development studio. Tajiri’s interest in collecting insects helped inspire the idea of creatures that players could find, collect and trade.

Nintendo published the games and released them for the Game Boy, while Creatures also became an important business and development partner in the wider Pokémon enterprise. These companies are therefore sometimes confused with the original developer.

Game Freak has continued to develop the main series across successive Nintendo systems. Its early work on Pokémon Red and Green established the turn-based battles, exploration and version-exclusive creatures that became central to the franchise.
