Game Freak developed the first Pokémon video games, Pocket Monsters Red and Green.
Game Freak was founded in Japan and began as a video game magazine before becoming a development studio. Satoshi Tajiri, one of its founders, created the Pokémon concept, while artist Ken Sugimori helped establish the creatures' visual identity. Game Freak then turned the idea into a role-playing game for the Game Boy.
Nintendo published the games and provided the hardware platform, so Nintendo is sometimes incorrectly named as the developer. Creatures, another important Pokémon company, became involved in areas including character design, trading cards, and franchise management. The original games therefore came from a collaboration, but Game Freak is the specific developer credited for the first main-series Pokémon titles.
