Which company developed the 1983 Star Wars arcade game?

The story behind the answer

Atari developed the 1983 Star Wars arcade game. Officially titled Star Wars, it was an Atari, Inc. rail shooter that placed players in the cockpit of an X-wing during the assault on the Death Star.

The game uses 3D color vector graphics and divides the action into connected stages. Players first battle TIE fighters, then fly across the Death Star's surface before attempting the famous trench run. Speech synthesis recreated lines associated with the film, adding an unusually cinematic touch for an early-1980s arcade machine.

Development began in 1981 under the working title Warp Speed. Atari later obtained a Star Wars license from Lucasfilm and completed the project. Mike Hally designed the game, while several programmers worked on its final implementation.

LucasArts is a frequent wrong answer because it became strongly associated with Star Wars games decades later. However, Lucasfilm Games and LucasArts did not develop this 1983 arcade original. Sega and Nintendo also had important roles in other video-game hardware and software, but Atari was the company behind this specific arcade release. The game received a sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, in 1985.
