Game Freak developed Pokémon Red and Green for Nintendo.

Game Freak began as a video-game magazine and creative group before becoming a development studio. Satoshi Tajiri, one of its founders, conceived the idea of a game centered on collecting and exchanging creatures through the Game Boy’s Link Cable.

Nintendo published the original Pokémon games, but Game Freak handled their development. Creatures, another important Pokémon company, contributed to areas such as character design, modeling, and later franchise management; it is therefore sometimes confused with the original game developer.

Game Freak continued developing the mainline Pokémon role-playing games across later generations. Its long association with the series is one reason the studio’s name appears in the credits of so many Pokémon adventures, even though Nintendo remains the best-known publisher associated with the brand.
