Which company developed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building?

The story behind the answer

Emaar Properties developed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

The tower opened officially on 4 January 2010 in Downtown Dubai. It was originally called Burj Dubai, but its name changed during the opening ceremony to honor Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then president of the United Arab Emirates.

Emaar Properties commissioned the project as the centerpiece of a large mixed-use development containing residences, offices, hotels, retail space, and public attractions. The tower was designed by the Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith serving as the lead architect.

The Burj Khalifa reaches 828 metres to its architectural top and has more than 160 occupied floors. Its record is sometimes confused with the height of other supertall buildings, such as the Shanghai Tower, which is shorter. Emaar remains one of the UAE’s best-known property developers, while Burj Khalifa is only one part of the wider Downtown Dubai project.
