Advanced Micro Devices, or AMD, created the Ryzen processor family and acquired Xilinx in 2022.
AMD introduced the Ryzen brand for desktop and mobile processors in 2017. Ryzen chips helped the company compete more strongly in consumer and high-performance computing markets after years of intense rivalry with Intel.
AMD completed its acquisition of programmable-chip maker Xilinx in February 2022 in a transaction valued at approximately $49 billion. Xilinx’s technology expanded AMD’s presence in adaptive computing, communications, automotive systems, and embedded markets.
AMD is often confused with Nvidia because both sell products used in accelerated computing, but their portfolios differ. AMD designs CPUs, GPUs, and adaptive chips, while Nvidia is especially associated with GPUs and AI accelerators. Like many major chip designers, AMD relies on external manufacturing partners.
