Which company created the first commercially successful web browser, Netscape Navigator, in 1994?

The story behind the answer

Which company created the first commercially successful web browser, Netscape Navigator, in 1994? Netscape.

Netscape Communications Corporation first developed and sold Netscape Navigator in 1994. The browser grew out of Mosaic, whose original development involved Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Andreessen later co-founded Mosaic Communications Corporation with Jim Clark, and the company changed its name to Netscape Communications Corporation.

Navigator quickly became the flagship product of the new company and the dominant browser of the 1990s. It helped bring the World Wide Web to a much wider audience by making graphical browsing easier for ordinary computer users. Netscape also popularized features and web technologies that influenced later browser development.

Mosaic is the most common wrong answer because it was an important predecessor, not the company that created Navigator. Microsoft is another frequent mix-up: Internet Explorer became Netscape’s major rival after Microsoft bundled it with Windows. The legal battle over that practice became central to Microsoft’s antitrust case.
