Meta Platforms created the Facebook social network and adopted its current corporate name in 2021.
Facebook, Inc. changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms, Inc. on October 28, 2021. The rebranding emphasized the company’s plans for social interaction and digital experiences that it described using the term metaverse.
Facebook remained the name of the company’s flagship social network, while Meta became the parent company’s corporate identity. Meta also owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, giving it several of the world’s most widely used communication platforms.
The name change did not create a new public company or erase the company’s market history. Meta’s shares continued trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker META after the change. The company had previously traded under the ticker FB, which was replaced in 2022.
